He may have a common name, but the legacy left by Dave Myers as an athlete at Chambersburg was nothing but uncommon.
Myers was a standout athlete in four sports for the Trojans before graduating in 1966, and he led a very interesting life after his playing days were over.
Myers filled his high school years with sports, playing three years of football in the fall, basketball in the winter and both baseball and track & field in the spring.
On the court, Myers scored over 1,000 points in his career – he was the first in Trojan history to do so. His 50-point game still stands as the school record single-game scoring mark, as does his school record 39 rebounds in one game.
His hoops career was highlighted by being selected to play in the Dapper Dan Classic All-Star game in Pittsburgh.
Myers said fellow Trojan athletes Barry Carter, Jay Green, Duffy Burns, Keyser Crittendon and Louis Myers were a great help to his career.
Myers played shortstop in baseball, was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies and played for two years in the Phillies’ minor league system.
He was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1967 and served for 13 months in Vietnam. He was declared MIA in August of 1968, but returned home in March of 1969.
Myers then spent 25 years with the Metro Police Department in Washington, D.C. before retiring as a homicide detective in 1995. He currently lives in North Carolina.
